Of gods and demigods

For John Muturi Kariuki

Kenya, the country of gods and demigods! A country where the citizenry live in perpetual fear. A country where one is not sure when they are breaking the law. A country where just existing could be construed as criminal. Oh, the demigods. They are all over you…some are called the ‘Lawmakers.’ Some the ‘Security Force’ others are mandated to watch over the city affairs in the name of the ‘City Council’ but they all got the wrong job descriptions! Their proper job descriptions should read ‘make their lives hell.’ ‘Make them live in constant trepidation.’ ‘Remind them as often as you may that you are god, they ought to bow before you.’ ‘Unleash terror on them if they seem to forget this.’ ‘Use as much force as you may, some of them can be hard-headed.’ ‘You also have the authority to maim or kill.’ Oh, the demigods called the ‘Security Force.’ Woe unto you if you run into them. They will come up with all sorts of misconstrued charges against you. Drunk and disorderly is an easy one. That is one of the ‘worst’ crimes in Kenya. Torture shall be meted upon you in their chambers of hell. You could leave the chambers alive…but not the same. Forget that there are people who almost milked this country dry and still spew ‘advice’ from their backyards. Their cronies have even formed churches…you know, after seeing the ‘light’…the road to Damascus could happen to anyone. Those are gods, they cannot be criminals. The gods, who drain you, hurt you, break you and then you pay them! Oh, lucky gods. Be guarded. Always remember there are gods all around us…watching over us, so stay wary, and be careful lest you commit a ‘crime.’
